The Mushroom That Became Medicine

Turkey Tail went from ancient medicine to modern laboratories. Discover the surprising history of this functional mushroom and its connection to gut health.

In the forests of Japan, China and North America, there is a mushroom you've probably walked past without ever noticing. It grows on dead trees. It's thin, leathery and striped with bands of brown, grey and orange that look remarkably like the feathers of a turkey's tail. Hence the slightly ridiculous name: Turkey Tail.

But behind the name is one of the more unusual stories in the history of functional mushrooms. Because decades before mushroom supplements started appearing in wellness stores, scientists in Japan were studying Turkey Tail seriously enough that a compound derived from it eventually became an approved pharmaceutical product.

Turkey Tail, or Trametes versicolor, has a long history of use in traditional Asian practices. But things became particularly interesting in Japan during the 1960s and 1970s, when researchers began investigating compounds contained within the mushroom, particularly complex molecules made from proteins and polysaccharides.

One of them became known as PSK, or polysaccharide-K. In 1977, Japan approved PSK as a pharmaceutical product, and it went on to be studied and used alongside conventional cancer treatments, particularly in Japan, because of its potential effects on immune function.

Turkey Tail had made the extremely unusual journey from something growing on decomposing wood to something being investigated in hospitals.

For decades, much of the scientific interest around Turkey Tail focused on immunity. Then scientists began paying much closer attention to something else entirely: the trillions of microorganisms living inside the human gut.

The microbiome has completely changed the way we think about digestion. Your gut isn't just processing your dinner. It's an ecosystem containing an enormous community of microorganisms, and like every ecosystem, what thrives there depends partly on what gets fed.

That's where Turkey Tail becomes interesting again.

Turkey Tail contains complex carbohydrates, including polysaccharides and beta-glucans, that aren't necessarily broken down by the body in the same way as ordinary nutrients. Instead, some can interact with the microbial communities living in the digestive system.

Research has therefore explored Turkey Tail compounds for their potential prebiotic effects, meaning they may help support certain microbes already living in your gut.

It's a wonderfully strange idea. You eat the mushroom, but some of what you're eating may actually be dinner for the organisms living inside you. Those organisms then produce compounds of their own that can interact with your body.

Suddenly gut health becomes less about simply "taking probiotics" and more like tending a garden. Adding bacteria is one thing. Feeding the ecosystem is another.
